When I was in Richmond I joined a hiking group that often went to Shenandoah National Park and the surrounding area of the Appalachian mountains. It's a great way to spend a day on the weekend, if you don't mind the seemingly endless (for a novice like me, anyway) elevation change. Plus you totally don't have to feel bad about devouring way too many calories afterward.

The hikes shown here are Humpback Rocks, Elliot Knob, Mount Pleasant, Cold Mountain, and Whiteoak Canyon. All have great views (Whiteoak mostly at the top), and what's the point of hiking without views?
